Takes place three days after Vin watches Adrian at the NY club.

Three days later Vin gets as far as Adrian's door, eight-thirty in the morning, far too early. He stands on the doorstep of the aging brownstone, finger poised over the bell and his heart beating fast, then he turns around and sits down on the front step, gets out his phone, and dials Adrian's number.

The phone rings three times before Adrian manages to answer, coming up out of sleep and reaching for it blindly, picking up and tucking it between his ear and the pillow.

"'Lo?" he says, voice thick with sleep.

"What are you doing still in bed?" Vin asks. "Got someone with you?"

Adrian frowns, eyes still closed. "Who -- I'm sorry, who is this?"
