Title: And We Drown
Fandom: The Shawshank Redemption
Pairing: Red/Andy
Rating: R, but we all know how unreliable my estimates are.
Notes: I think this is a very long time coming, although not as long as it might be. I came to this film fairly late in its life – about a decade after its release in 1994, in fact, long after Forrest Gump cleaned house with all the awards for which it, too, had been nominated. Seeing as I hadn't seen Shawshank at the time, I wasn't indignant – but I can guarantee you that I am now. This story works with the film rather than the novella, as I'm of the opinion that the script actually improves upon the original material. I'm occasionally inclined to this kind of heresy. Also: SPOILER ALERT. If you haven't seen the film or read the novella and don't want to be spoiled, I strongly suggest you hold out on reading this. I would like to thank T.S. Eliot for his unexpected (but not unwelcome) intrusion upon the tone of this piece.
Summary: Till human voices wake us…
