The first time Jack and Steven met was on the 17th of October, 1997. Jack was 23; Steven was 20, and hassling Jack to buy him booze. After the third attempt failed, Jack turned around to find his wallet liberated and Steven over at the bar, trying to convince the bartender that his face looked bigger in real life because he was on a course of steroids.

It had worked (or more likely the bartender really didn't care) and Steven had returned the wallet minus the price of an extra-large brandy and six beers. Jack was already half-gone and hadn't done anything but grab two of the beers and smack Steven across the back of the head. Four hours later, Steven was carrying him to his car, further liberating another seventy-five dollars from his back pocket.

Steven left Jack sprawled across the wheel of his car with an origami penguin stuck in his breast pocket and a note in ball point on the back of his hand. By the time Jack woke up, he'd sweated through whatever the note was.

The first time Jack and Steven actually spoke was the 21st of October, 1997. Jack was sitting at the end of the bar, engaged in scintillating conversation with the female bartender when Steven arrived. Or as far as Jack was concerned that was what was happening. Steven saw Jack propped between the bar and the wall, and the bartender trying as best as she could to make her escape. So he plonked himself down next to him and asked if Jack was ever going to buy him that beer he owed him. Desperate to get the bartender's exceptional breasts back in front of him, Jack didn't really pay attention to who was beside him, and just waved at the barmaid to get a new pair of beers.

After she'd left again, Jack finally turned to Steven and realised that he did not, under any circumstances, owe him a beer. Luckily Jack's hand-eye coordination wasn't at its best, and Steven dodged with minimal effort, pinning Jack's hand to the bar.

"Alright, mate. You're a big man. I'm a big man. So, let's leave it at that and just have a drink. Shall we?"

"What do you want from me?"

"Right now, I just want a beer. Which I've luckily acquired, so we can move on from there. I'm Steven. Daedalus. Like in the book."

"Jack Bourdain. What book?"

"Never mind. I haven't read it either. Now, how about another beer?"

The next morning, Jack woke up across his steering wheel again, with another note scrawled on the back of his hand. This one had managed to survive the night due to the city's rapidly dropping temperature.

The note read: Fine. Maybe next time I owe you."

The first time Jack and Steven worked together was the 15th of November, 1997. Jack had just been promoted to sous chef, and when he arrived that morning he found Steven at the prep table, chopping vegetables. Assuming this was another step on Steven's bizarre stalking path, Jack grabbed him by the neck and hurled him into the back alley, only to be told that he had actually been hired.

When Jack flashed back to his knowledge of Steven the words 'trustworthy', 'hardworking', or even 'sane' were not the ones that first popped to mind, and he tried his best to convince Pierre that this was a very bad idea. Pierre ignored Jack's advice, instead waxing lyrical about the new prep chef's hands in a way that Jack was not entirely comfortable with.

Jack made the educated decision not to warn Steven about Pierre's possible intentions. Partly because he was trying to get rid of the younger man as quickly as possible, partly because he wasn't sure if Steven would mind, and partly because he'd worked with the chef for two years and was slightly afraid of what Pierre would do, if he knew the 'new boy' had been warned away.

Steven, bizarrely enough, seemed to stick at Pierre's, and a week later he found Jack at the bar and set a beer down in front of him.

"Is this supposed to make things even?"

"Well, if you were still able to read the note, last time, we agreed on one."

"I'm pretty sure you took advantage of me last time."

"Are you impugning my honour, sir?"

"I..."

"Do you know what that means?"

"Of course, I do! And, of course I am."

"Good." Steven swallowed the rest of his beer. "So it's your round."

Jack wasn't exactly sure what happened there, but whoever's buying, he wouldn't say no to a beer.

The next morning, Jack woke up sprawled across his center console. This time the note was written on a folded up piece of paper, but it got so soaked in drool overnight that it's illegible.

The first time Jack and Steven kissed was on the 14th of December, 1997, at 2.15am. Pierre's had been booked out for a private party, someone very big and important, so everyone was all go, all night, until Jack realised at around 1 am that Steven had disappeared.

What was more surprising than Pierre taking twenty minutes longer to notice that Steven was MIA was that Jack found himself covering for him once it was noticed. Helping other people out was not something Jack did, as a rule, but for some reason, he didn't want Steven to be fired anymore. So he misdirected until they finally closed, and once everyone else had left the kitchen, he sat down and tried to figure out where Steven could be.

The back-up fridge wasn't the first place he thought to look, but having spent a month working with Steven and slowly becoming aware of his somewhat morally-questionable ideas on the exact ownership of not-yet inventoried produce, he realised it probably should have been.

(Exactly who had thought it was a good idea to lock Steven inside would remain a mystery.)

Jack wrapped Steven in an extra jacket and made him a giant bowl of coffee as he sat shivering on the countertop.

The exact sequence of events that followed will never be exactly clear in Jack's mind. The line of coke and three shots of vodka that had propelled him through the shift probably had something to do with this.

Jack remembers leaving the coffee on the counter, taking Steven's hands and blowing on them to warm them up.

Jack will forever deny having any recollection of that moment, however. Or the next one, when Steven asked him what the fuck he was doing, and he didn't quite answer fast enough.

The next moment, though. The one when Steven grabbed a handful of Jack's shirt, stepped off the counter and shoved him into the wall. That one he'll admit to remembering. Even if it's because he initially thought Steven was going to punch him.

But he didn't punch him. Instead, Steven tightened his grip, pulled Jack closer, and kissed him. Hard. Until Jack found himself out of breath and pulling away. Steven only gave him fifteen seconds to catch his breath before sliding his hands over Jack's shoulders and pulling him back in.

The first time Jack and Steven had sex was on the 14th of December at 2.30am. Jack made plenty of mistakes, and, therefore, that is not a story he'll be telling anyone willingly.

But if his car could talk...
