Lanny couldn't be a fruit. He'd grown up poor, and Jewish, which some people would tell you was no impediment in show business, but when you lost the plum role of the Colgate Kid because your nose was too big, or when you couldn't make it to the audition for Chuckie's Television Playhouse because your father had drank the last of your bus fare, then it was a damn big impediment. He'd worked like a dog his whole life, giving them what they wanted, flirting with the women in the audience and batting his eyes at Vince like some goddamn ten-cent hooker, and he couldn't throw it all away now. Not even for Vince. Not even for the only guy who'd respected him, never mind loved him, the guy who'd committed murder to protect them both.

When he leaned forward at the telethon, the tears running down his face were, for the first time, not staged. When he spoke, he was asking Vince's forgiveness more than that precocious blonde kid's. Lanny could make it without Vince, he knew that. It wouldn't be the same, and it wouldn't be easy, but change and hard work were two things Lanny Morris was well accustomed to.

Love, on the other hand, was something that had never come into his world, and he wasn't about to let it start now.
