"McNary here ta see ya, boss."

"Thank you, Madeline." Dixon Hill, who had been attempting to nap (feet resting comfortably on his desk) looked up from beneath his hat to smile briefly at his secretary. Madeline curtsied and left the doorway, leaving only Detective McNary, smiling nervously and wringing the brim of his hat.

"What can I do for you, Detective?" Dixon asked as McNary walked a bit further into the room and closed the door.

"Oh, nothing really. It's just that the wife is making her famous pot roast tonight and she said to invite you over. After all, you never did come last time you were invited."

Dixon glanced at the clock on the wall, which read 11:06. McNary must be giving up his lunch break for this. Dixon felt mildly flattered. "Well," he said, "I suppose we're both lucky I don't have any other plans."

McNary grinned. "Stopped by yesterday, but you was out."

"Doing my job, I imagine," Dixon answered dryly.

"I guess so," McNary agreed, looking like he had more to say.

Dixon raised an eyebrow. "Cat got your tongue?"

McNary shook his head. "Just... well, you know, I don't have to be back at the station till noon, so..."

"So?" Dixon prompted, enjoying himself.

"So," McNary repeated, looking mildly annoyed, "I was wondering if you wanted to... you know... take a break?" He looked significantly at Dixon.

Dixon feigned deep thought. "Quite," he said after a short pause, striding purposefully over to the door. "Madeline," he called.

She looked up at him, buffing her nails. "Boss?"

"Would you like to take your lunch break now?"

"But it ain't for another twenty minutes."

"How about you start it now and come back at the time you usually do?" Dixon asked. "Detective McNary has something very important to discuss with me, but it's highly confidential and he'd rather not chance you overhearing it."

"Well I wouldn't tell no-one, boss! Honest!" Madeline looked rather offended.

"Of course not," Dixon reassured her. "But don't you want the extra twenty minutes?"

"Now I ain't saying I ain't takin' you up on your offer, boss," Madeline said as she stood up from her desk. "I'm just sayin', I wouldn't tell no-one," she continued, getting her coat.

When Dixon looked back into his office, McNary was sitting on the edge of his desk. He raised an eyebrow. "She gone?"

As on cue, the front door closed. "Indeed." Dixon walked back into the office, directly toward McNary. McNary grinned.

"So, have we actually got anything important to discuss?"

"Shut up and take your pants off," Dixon murmured, arms folded over his chest, eyes trailing down McNary's body.

McNary raised his eyebrow under the scrutiny. "You like to get right down to business, don't you?"

"I haven't much time," Dixon clarified.

"But your secretary won't be back for forty-five minutes."

"I know. But I have things that I need to get back to..." Dixon trailed off, hoping McNary wouldn't ask for clarification.

He didn't.

I enjoyed it a LOT! :D Yes, the scene in which they say goodbye is one of the slashiest scenes ever on TNG. I'm always waiting for them to kiss each other. LOL.

Ooooh, I tend to read every slash story that has to do with Jean-Luc in some way. :DDDD I love to read it even more when it's about a slash pairing that I like (there are a few Picard pairings that don't really make much sense, like Picard/LaForge or something).
Like Hill/McNary. That pairing makes PERFECT sense. :D
