Summary: Jonathan and Toby contemplate rules (one in particular).

Intellectually, Toby knows the hospital doesn't sanction sexual relations between suicide ward patients. It just sometimes feels as if they want the unwritten rule to be broken -- it's not like they're giving the patients any alternative. Wanking? What a British thing to do. If there's one thing Toby knows about the Irish from a lifetime of being one, it's that the Irish are most definitely not wankers. If they were, they'd still be a colony. Toby doesn't envy the Scottish.

Jonathan doesn't think about any of the things Toby does. Not wanking, nor the British, nor being incorrigibly Irish, nor colonies. He thinks about how rules are made to be broken. He also thinks about how Toby is his favourite person to break them with.
