Disclaimer: I own nothing belonging to the creators of Malcolm in the Middle. Only the words in the story. Sort of ;)
Summary: Don't ask, don't tell

There are some things at Marlin that people don’t talk about. You think that it’s silly, and deeply repressed, and you smirk about it a lot, until one night you quietly slip into someone else’s bed, for one night, for just one night, and no-one says anything the next morning. Then you stop smirking, and stop even thinking about those things no-one needs to talk about.

They used to talk about Francis when he first arrived. Rough, ridiculing, elbow-in-the-rib type jokes behind his back, in the locker rooms and dormitories, all the while keeping one hungry eye on him to see which bed he’d choose first.

They all stopped talking after the pool match with Spengler.

They don’t see anything, so of course no-one talks about anything.

No-one talks about the fact that Francis has had more conversations with Spengler than the rest of them put together.

No-one talks about the fact that Francis is the only one Spengler ever calls by his first name.

No-one talks about the fact that when Francis is upset, really upset about something, the first place he heads to is Spengler’s office.

No-one talks about the fact that Francis is the only one Spengler looks in the eye when dishing out punishment.

No-one talks about the fact that Francis stands up a lot straighter and keeps his uniform a lot neater nowadays.

No-one talks about the fact that the only time they’ve ever seen Spengler smile, really really smile, was at that pool game.

No-one talks about the fact that that evening was the only one Francis has ever spent not complaining or looking for trouble, or even really talking to any of them at all.

No-one talks about the fact that Spengler’s eyes tend to follow Francis down the corridor as he walks away, too, before he turns the other way, head held high.

No-one even notices the fact that after one of their ‘conversations’, Francis tends to spend a lot of time laid alone on his bed, quiet, just kind of…thinking.

There are some mistakes you don’t call people on.

There are some things that are too sad to say.
